Aeluros Enables Lead-Free 10 Gigabit Ethernet Solutions with RoHS-Compliant Green PHY Devices

Fully Qualified Green Devices Available Well In Advance of RoHS Requirements

Mountain View, California, June 6, 2005 - Aeluros today announced the immediate availability of green variants of its Puma 10 Gbps physical layer IC devices. These products address the increasingly sensitive commercial and political pressures for environmentally friendly products. Aeluros aligns lead-free, green, and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) requirements under the unified ‘green’ designation, and Aeluros’ products eliminate lead and the other 5 RoHS-restricted substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE) from the package molding, solder balls, package substrate, and die attach epoxy. This leadership position represents a continuation of Aeluros’ efforts to emphasize customer interest well ahead of legislative requirements.

“By providing green products well in advance of the RoHS implementation requirement of July 1, 2006, we have allowed customers to design their optical modules and subsystems to be green today, and to avoid the need for costly re-qualification efforts later,” said Nader Gamini, Aeluros VP of Manufacturing. “Aeluros’ focus upon low-cost, mainstream technologies such as CMOS process technology and wirebond plastic BGA packaging, and our close relationships with our suppliers have helped facilitate the availability of our green products.”

Aeluros’ green products are compliant with industry-standard lead-free solder profiles for ease of manufacturing, and have been fully qualified using JEDEC-standard procedures. This includes a robust suite of solderability, high temperature storage, HAST, temperature cycle, and MSL testing. Green products from Aeluros are fully pin and performance compatible with standard products, enabling a smooth, low-risk transition for both existing and new customers. These devices are designated by a unique ordering code, and will continue to be supplemented by standard, non-lead-free product.

Puma Product Family Details

The Aeluros Puma product family consists of 10 Gbps-to-XAUI physical layer solutions for numerous applications within 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Fibre Channel markets. The AEL1001 device provides the industry’s lowest-power solution for XENPAK, X2 or XPAK optical modules, and incorporates an integrated limiting amplifier for reduced module cost. The AEL1004 device provides a WAN/LAN implementation for optical modules through the integration of the IEEE 802.3ae-defined WAN Interface Sublayer (WIS) for Ethernet operation across SONET/SDH networks. The AEL1002 device provides a XFI-compliant 10 Gbps interface for implementation of a XAUI-to-XFI bridge function for 10 Gbps line cards or NICs developed using the XFP optical module form factor.

All three devices are built using generic 0.13um CMOS process technologies and generic wire-bond plastic BGA packaging, enabling cost optimization for the rapidly expanding 10 Gigabit Ethernet marketplace. The devices are fully compliant with a range of industry standards and MSAs, and incorporate register sets appropriate to the XENPAK & XFP MSAs, IEEE 802.3ae standard and end-customer-specific specifications. All three devices are pin-compatible in a 144-pin, 13x13mm plastic, wirebond BGA package, and have been thoroughly verified in a range of end-system environments.
